How it all started

In 1948 two brothers, Francesco and Claudio Attia, master tanners of Sicily, set sail for Normandy in France. They were to start a new life and realize a personal dream… to start a tannery of their own.

As Normandy grew, the small tannery, started in 1950 by the Attia brothers, flourished and a family tradition of excellence in cowhide tanning began. Their commitment to quality has continued and over 50 years later, the team at eCowhides.com continues to make the name eCowhides the world’s finest cowhide products.

To this day, every eCowhides cow hides is the same methods pioneered by 1950’s by the Attia Brothers from Sicily. Their unique 46 step tanning method has been constantly refined and now sits at the heart of the Attia Cowhide story. Unparalleled Access to Raw Material

We select raw material from throughout the world, but believe the quality of our cowhides owes much to our location in the midst of the world’s finest flock of cows: the vast cow stations of Brittany outback, and the high country runs and lush green pastoral farms of Normandy. Our tanneries in Normandy and Brittany are placed in prime cow farming areas, ensuring a plentiful source of high quality raw material and the best relationship with our suppliers. Our people are constantly in the plants where raw material is selected, purchasing directly at the source to reduce cost and training suppliers to select only materials that meet the needs of our customers.

Process Innovations

The eCowhides laboratory designs and proves processes that meet the needs of an ever-changing global marketplace and material supply. To be able to produce cowhides in Normandy and Brittany, our processes must not only deliver products to our customers’ expectations, they must also meet the cost, health and safety and environmental standards of the European Union. Blending the skills of the craftsperson with the latest automated manufacturing techniques, our research and development team enable the finest quality cowhide to be produced on a global scale, at globally competitive costs.

Traditionally the making of cowhides was done at a cost to the environment with heavy water and chemical use. Today eCowhides closed loop process, cutting edge chemistry and advanced mechanical technology enable us to preserve the natural beauty of our cowhides with minimal inputs and ever-reducing impact on the environment. Regular audits prove time and again that we are industry leaders in the development of process that put care for the environment alongside the quality of our products.
